Briefly about the topic

The psychological work environment is about the psychosocial conditions in the workplace which can affect both the psychological and physical health — positive as well as negative.

It could for example be about:

  • The relationship with colleagues, the boss, or guests

  • If violence or offensive acts occurs including bullying or sexual harassment.

  • How the work is organized and the character of the job.

  • If there are high emotional demands on the job.

A good psychological work environment creates a better sense of teamwork at the workplace and creates employees that are engaged and capable of handling changes. It contributes to better welfare and less sick leave, which contributes positively to the bottom line.

A lacking psychological work environment can lead to increased sick leave, work cessation, no teamwork, and bad customer experiences.

The employer has a duty to ensure that the employees won’t become ill because of the psychological work environment.

Why is this topic relevant to our industry?

In this industry there can be quite a heavy workload, time pressure and unclear demands. This can affect the guests’ experience. Here are some of the problems that can occur:

  • If there are too many tasks and not enough time, it’s likely that longer periods of pressure and a lot of guests may occur.

  • It’s problematic if you don’t have time for a break and have to work at a fast pace.

  • Sometimes it isn’t always obvious, what is expected of you regarding how much work should be, the quality of your work, deadlines and so on.

  • Unclear and contradicting demands can be the root of tough dilemmas — for example, if there are high demands for the quality of the work and having to solve problems quickly.

Assignment 4b

Every business with employees must compose a risk assessment (APV). It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure this happens. The employer must involve the OHS organization in the planning, organizing, implementing, and following up on the APV.

An APV must include every significant aspect of the work environment, comprising of:

  • Physical

  • Ergonomic

  • Psychological

  • Chemical

  • Risk for accidents

There are typically 5 stages in an APV. The business must be able to account for going through every stage in the APV.

1: Identification and surveying: Look into if there are any risks of a poor work environment as well as accidents, both physical and psychological.

2: Description and assessment: Implement systematic problem-solving and suggestions for solutions.

3: Incorporating absences due to illness: Are there any conditions in regard to the work environment that are caused because of sick leave? Any particular reasons regarding the sick leave that you can work on and follow up on in the plan of action?

4: Prioritisation and plan of action: If there are acute hazards, they must be followed up on immediately and/or a plan for when and how they should be handled.

5: Follow-up inspection of the plan of action: Agree on who is responsible for following up on the plan. Discuss and come to an agreement on when it’s good enough and schedule times for revising the plan of action.


An APV must:

  • Be implemented every third year or when big changes happen to the workplace that will impact the work environment. For example, a change of location.

  • Be written down and deal with all the essential work environment conditions.

  • Be accessible to all employees, supervisors, and the Danish Work Environment Authority.

In businesses without an OHS organization (with under 10 employees) the supervisors and employees must produce an APV together. The involvement is documented by the rider of the APV by a supervisor and an employee representative.

  • Immerse yourself in the psychological work environment, the social capital and Risk Assesments (APV).

    How to solve the assignment:

    - The task number/which topic you have chosen.

    - To describe the information you have read up on and the reflections it's given you.

    - Seeing as the Mandatory Occupational Health and Safety Organization course is about working together, you must discuss the topic/contents with a colleague or your work environment group.

    The purpose is for you to grow more knowledgeable of how you can work together to prevent and control different challenges that may occur relating to the topic.

    Think of at least 2 learning points - meaning:

    Your thoughts/stance on the themes you have chosen in regards to the conditions at your workplace. It has to be something you/You have to be aware of - mention examples of this.

    Criteria for the teacher's feedback:

    It's important that you can tell from the assignment that they've spent time working with the contents of the theme and the evaluations it's brought with the research. It's important that you are able to see that the new information has been discussed at the work place. Everyone gets constructive feedback on all of their assignments.
